Shelf Conscious

Chris Killip 1992
This is about book shelves.  I've thought about photographing my own, but they don't look like any of the pictures from this article.  So, should I photograph as is or straighten them up?  Easier to go with as is.  Straightening would take way too much time! But - do I want to show my lack of organization?  I'll have to think about it.  Francesca Mari has covered a lot of ground with this article, but it's worth reading.

I think I'll save the shelf photos for 2013.

This is Not my Work/This is my Work

Suzanne Bloom and Ed Hill, 2009
In 2009 the collaboration of Suzanne Bloom and Ed Hill.  It took two people to come up with this one.

Trendland has these images from Solve Sundsbo, a fashion photographer, that were published just this past March of 2012 in the W Magazine.

Of course these images are not Delgado's, but it is easy to see that they are using the same idea for composition. Delgado made his 5 years earlier.

A Dilemma

When Your Idea is too Close to Someone Else's maybe you decide not to publish it. David Saxe had a dilemma.  Read about what he decided to do on Black Star.

I don't think anyone has tried to copy this one yet.  I'll be posting other ones that they haven't latched on to so far.

Another blog about paper sculpture.  I'm included in this blog, along with the usual suspects.  I'm just getting started.  I'll gradually show you more, along with some imitators.

I can see how some people just aren't able to come up with a good idea, so the next best thing is to copy someone who already has.  This is not art!

Altered Books

I am just making a comparison and showing a timeline.

Georgia Russell
A Blog About Paper and Books has a page on Georgia Russell, an artist who does amazing things with books.  I was included in a book titled "Paper, Tear, Fold, Rip, Crease Cut" published by Black Dog Publishing in 2009.  I found out about Russell when I saw the book.  She makes incredible art.  She started quite a few years ago.  Some of her earliest book sculptures are from 2006!

Tattoo Art Dispute

People who have a tattoo may think they own the copyright of the art because it is on their body.  This is not the case.  Chris Escobedo is suing THQ for using his image in their video game "UFC Undisputed"

Tattoos and Copyright

Who Owns Body Art?: We know that artists own the copyright for their work — but what about tattoo artists? This question is the subject of a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court of Arizona, where tattoo artist Chris Escobedo claims that video game producer THQ, Inc., is infringing on his copyright in a new mixed martial arts video game. The game features fighter Carlos Condit, who — both in the game and in life — has one of Escobedo's lion tattoos inked on his torso. Now Escobedo, the artist, wants credit.Tattoos and Copyright the link.

I've tried to research this more, anything that has to do with Escobedo will not open show up on the web.  Very strange.  I'm going to keep searching.  Looks like someone doesn't want us to read about this.

A Big Offender

This was published in Parkett in 2009, and the artist has taken down the image from his website. I have also been compensated by Parkett.  I had to hire a lawyer in Germany.  Fortunately, my dealer in Frankfurt was able to help me with that.  Markus Uhr is a collage artist who uses all kinds of paper and images in his work.  He took my Angel Food image and stuck it into the middle of his collage.  This would have been legal if he had sufficiently changed it.  Obviously, he didn't do that!

Parkett claimed that they never would have published this if they had known that this was not Uhr's totally original work.  Uhr told them it was.

The interesting part about this is that I probably never would have known, since Parkett is not widely subscribed to here in the United States.  I have a friend who does receive it, and she is the one that alerted me about the image.

I really do like mixed media work, I have been doing some myself.  I'm careful to only mix my own images, or if I use an image from another source, it is not recognizable anymore.  You can see Uhr tried to do that in this piece with images that are behind mine.  Ironically, they are from Richard Prince!

Nail Polish rip off of Abigail Larson.  There are lots of people that copy.  There are also big companies that can afford to pay for their art they use in advertising.  Larson does good work, and should be compensated for it!  I just hope she doesn't send a large monster to bludgeon me.  I'm posting one of her drawings because I like them so much.

An Article from 2010  about the "Untitled" Show in 2010.  I will be re-blogging older posts from other sites just to document a timeline.

Quote

"If an author is once detected in borrowing he will be suspected of plagiarism ever after" - William Hazlitt.
Yep, once it's out there on the internet, it's pretty hard to take it back.
I will post for anyone that send me information about imitation/copies or someone who plagiarizes. I've already had some good ones sent to me. Oh, and.....
I'm working my way up to one of the major offenders of my work.

This is my "Butterfly #2." It's made from a book titled "How to Use Your IPod"  2007 is the year it was created. I found the book at Half Price Books when I began my second series using more color. I did not dye the book.  All the colors were there.

the internet reaches all the way over here to the United States.

My photo, "Torso" from 2007.  So - who had the original idea?

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

I've started this blog in order for people to see my work, and to see the imitators of my work.  As time goes on, I'll also be watching out for other artists, and try to help them as well.
